The Racehorse Experiment

When I got Chance and Zola the herd consisted of 15 horses (that number included Zola and Money Talkin). There were actually 2 herds combined. My core herd has been together since 2003 and consists of Huey, Lucy, and Bettina. In 2005 Roxie became a member, in 2006 we rescued Willow, and Rose, and in 2007 Shadow joined the herd. The other herd consisted of my friends' horses Star, Scotch, Fancy, Top Khat, Whiskey, and Scarlet.

In the spring of 2011, I had Willow and Rose (Chance's girls) put down.  Willow had a chronic knee injury that she was finding painful, and Rose had a degenerative condition of some kind that even vets were not sure about. 

Moving to Wild Dreams Farm this fall (October 2011) changed the herd yet again.  Now it was just my horses, Chance, Zola, Lucy, Huey, Bettina, Roxanna, and Shadow.  In November, the two mares, Tiz Life (Beauty) and More Oysters (Maura) joined the herd, bringing the total number to 9.

When Lena arrived in December it rounded the herd off at 10. Eight fillies/mares and 2 geldings.

This is the horses seeing clothes on a clothesline for the first time.  It made for a great photo, since they were all looking in the same direction at the same time.  From left to right (by face): Huey, Bettina, Chance, Roxanna, Zola, Lucy, Shadow, Beauty, and Maura.  This photo also shows that Maura and Beauty were not yet completely accepted by the herd at that time, as they are together some distance away.
