Trainer using science and technology to train

I received a link to this article today:

It’s nice to see some publicity about those using science and technology to condition racehorses.  Australia and New Zealand seem to be leading the way in using heart rate monitors and other tools to get facts about the horses they train.

I will be rooting for Ortensia on June 19th!

Not to knock Australia and New Zealand, but we in the US used heart rate monitors in the 1980′s and 1990′s while conditioning racehorses and endurances horses. Kansas State University had a very forward looking research program dealing with that very thing during those same time spans and I believe it continues today, The real problem with using state of the art training techniques are trainers and owners who are used to the same old techniques and shun any new technologies. THEY WANT TO WIN NOW!

Yes, I know that heart rate monitors have been used on racehorses – actually since the 70′s, as shown in the video “Thoroughbreds: A Magic Way of Going.” However Australia and New Zealand Thoroughbred trainers are actually using them. Here they are not in significant use, other than in research. However the Standardbred trainers do use them – and certainly to their benefit.
