The filly has a call name . . . finally
A friend suggested I look at Native American names. I don’t normally do that, as I am not Native American, and TB’s are not horses of the west. But in my search for names that mean bold, independent, and clever, I found myself on a site for Native American female names . And I stumbled over a name that spoke to me, and which, given our girl’s jumping ability – and hopefully racing future – seemed appropriate. Since her grandsire’s name was Indian Charlie, and her sire’s name is Thunderprince, I don’t feel a Native American name is totally out of order.
So, the name? Cholena (though I will use a more phonetic spelling of Kolena), from the Delaware language, meaning That Which Soars. And of course, it’ll just be Lena for short.

I like Kolena, although with the nickname of Lena, some will think she has cutting horse lines

FYI, check out the footage of this year’s Sham Stakes at Santa Anita — won by a gangly, 17+hands chestnut colt named Out of Bounds — only his 4th start…his style and stride looked to me like Zenyatta’s…AND, not only is he NOT horribly inbred to Native Dancer/Northern Dancer/Mr. Prospector, but he RUNS WITHOUT LASIX! Wonder if he will make enough bux to get into the KY Derby?
We have more blessed rain here in Texas (after the summer of 2011, never again will I complain about too much rain!) , but we had lovely weather last weekend and Jack and I rode Eagle and Sarge. I really think all 4 of us had a good time. It is wonderful to see how “hooked” Eagle is with Jack and Sarge with me.
Have a wonderful week,
Linda F
You’re right everyone will think she’s some kind of Chicolena! But it’s just her call name so not that many people will even know it. Her racing name is still going to be Bohemian Princess. There just is no nickname there.
Interesting about Out of Bounds. And exciting. Hopefully he will do well and show that Lasix is not necessary.
I am so glad to hear you guys in Texas are getting rain. A friend lives in Bailey and she says the drought has been so bad that trees are dying.
